98. Inn Season – January 10, 2015 – Royal Oak, MI

20150110_142427This frigid but sunny Saturday afternoon I headed over to Royal Oak and my first lunch at Inn Season. I’d seen a lot of mixed reviews about the place on Yelp regarding service – but it was super-prompt and friendly on my visit, to the point where my friend and I felt like we were being total slowpokes. And the coconut curry special dish I had was scrumptious – a veggie mix including sweet potatoes, spinach, and red peppers served with saffron rice and a delicious apple chutney. Whether you are a vegetarian/vegan or a devoted omnivore like me, check this place out if you are looking to eat more clean in 2015.

I was super excited when I saw advertisements for the Better Health that recently opened on Hall Road in Shelby Township. Finally, a Whole-Foods-ish store in my neighborhood! I’d never heard of Better Health before this, but it’s a Michigan chain, with 13 other locations in the state, most of which are focused in the Metro-Detroit area. The Shelby Township shop is a beautiful shrine to natural-clean-foodie-organic goodness – the kind of place I could spend way, way too much money in.

28. Astro Coffee – June 6, 2014 – Detroit, MI

I loved the décor and vibe of this coffee house (located right in the same strip of businesses as Sugar House and Slow’s in Corktown) – very bright and cheery, and hipster-y (and I mean that in a good way, because I love most hipster-y things). The cake and cappuccino I had were delicious.

My only disappointment was with the fact that the music was blaring on the day that I was there, to the point where I couldn’t concentrate on the reading I was doing and had to leave after a little over an hour (I had hoped to kill a few hours there). I generally love loud music – and am one of those annoying people who often watches my TV at the top volume of 100 to make sure I hear every little thing everyone is saying – but I found it hard to concentrate in this context and kind of out of character for a coffee house. Not that being out of character in itself is a bad thing.

Otherwise, I thought the place had great ambience, and I love that it focuses on using local/natural/organic ingredients in its sandwiches and dessert offerings.

8. Cacao Tree Café – April 5, 2014 – Royal Oak, MI

Delicious organic vegan meals are offered here. Above is a picture of the burrito I ordered. The “meat” is a seasoned mix of walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds; I really appreciated how tasty it was, as I haven’t been able to stand any other fake meat I’ve had in the past. This was incredibly healthy AND great-tasting – yay!
