29. Om Café – June 13, 2014 – Ferndale, MI

I had lunch here and really enjoyed it. My Buddhist priest stir-fry was amazingly delicious, and my server was incredibly pleasant and knowledgeable.

Even though I’m not a vegan or vegetarian (and Om Café is a vegan/vegetarian joint), I love eating at these kinds of places, because I love healthy dishes that feature whole, unprocessed ingredients. I would highly recommend this place.

28. Astro Coffee – June 6, 2014 – Detroit, MI

I loved the décor and vibe of this coffee house (located right in the same strip of businesses as Sugar House and Slow’s in Corktown) – very bright and cheery, and hipster-y (and I mean that in a good way, because I love most hipster-y things). The cake and cappuccino I had were delicious.

My only disappointment was with the fact that the music was blaring on the day that I was there, to the point where I couldn’t concentrate on the reading I was doing and had to leave after a little over an hour (I had hoped to kill a few hours there). I generally love loud music – and am one of those annoying people who often watches my TV at the top volume of 100 to make sure I hear every little thing everyone is saying – but I found it hard to concentrate in this context and kind of out of character for a coffee house. Not that being out of character in itself is a bad thing.

Otherwise, I thought the place had great ambience, and I love that it focuses on using local/natural/organic ingredients in its sandwiches and dessert offerings.

27. Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina – May 30, 2014 – Royal Oak, MI

There are a lot of interesting pizzas offered here, most more unique than the typical pepperoni or barbeque-chicken pies offered at other restaurants. My friend and I shared the margherita pizza, but I do wish we would’ve tried one with more interesting toppings (such as the fingerling potato or prosciutto di parma pizzas). We were having a hard time agreeing on one.

Additionally, I ordered the saffron rice risotto balls – amazing!

25. Ciccarelli’s – May 29, 2014 – Shelby Township, MI

Here is another place that I live really close to that I had never been to.

Actually, I was here when it was still Club 22 – and I have to say, I like this sports bar reincarnation much, much better.

There are a lot of huge TVs in this joint, as there should be. Great for watching Wings games (start of preseason only two months from the date I’m writing this post!) or any other big match-ups.

24. Vinotecca – May 22 – Royal Oak, MI

This place has AMAZING happy hour deals, especially considering it’s in Royal Oak – half off glasses of wine, small plates, and pizza (and I believe the craft cocktails may be half off, as well) and twenty percent off bottles of wine every day (even weekends!) from 4-6 p.m. and on Thursdays from 9 p.m. to close. I got the Asian spring rolls and the margherita pizza – both awesome – and enjoyed an hour of wine-sipping and people-watching with mi madre.

20. Cupcake Station – May 16, 2014 – Ferndale, MI

I’m a huuuugge fan of cupcakes – and cake in general (definitely one of my Top Ten Favorite Things in Life) – so of course I had to check out the Cupcake Station. Much love to this local cupcake chain that cranks out 24 different flavors of cupcakes from scratch daily. Check out its website and drool – and then hit up one of its five locations (Rochester, Plymouth, Ann Arbor, and Birmingham are the other sites).

Fun fact: according to its website, Cupcake Station was one of the very first businesses in the United States to open a cupcake shop and was the first to do so in Michigan. So they’ve played a huge part in the modern-day cupcake craze.
